GRAB THE FIRST RUNG.

I’ve been trying to do some more personal design work and art lately. Just projects for fun…whatever I see in my mind when I close my eyes…you know, the things you think of right before you fall asleep (that’s my time, usually). I am planning to start sharing them on the blog. Some will probably be crappy, but I am just looking forward to making things on my own terms. It’s so easy to get burned out when you’re working full time at a design firm — you don’t get to pick the projects, they come to you — and with a deadline that you haven’t negotiated, whether it’s feasible or not (it’s not uncommon for me to have to churn out first rounds on 3-5 projects a day). Staying mentally fresh and creative while you’re firing off that many ideas is very tough. So I’ve decided it’s up to me to stay sharp and inspired — and I WANT to make things I enjoy creating, so that I have a constant reminder of why I love art and design.

It’s certainly been a struggle to get started on that though. The first step to beginning any new endeavor is always to just grab the first rung and start climbing (and don’t look down). Generally, once you get some momentum going, you’ll find you can keep up — and want to. I’m trying to tell myself that when it comes to exercising frequently (which has been a sloooooooow climb, let me tell you).

We can all get there though. Happy Friday!

AMY! I am so glad I’m not the only one who gets the ideas as they fall asleep. Seriously, ALWAYS. I often lie there trying to switch off and something I’ve been trying to figure out all day design wise will pop into my head – a really clear image which I then, of course, either have to get up and draw it or hope I remember it in the morning! How do you deal with that?
Also, 3-5 project first rounds PER DAY?! Lady, you’re some kind of one woman design factory! ha! That’s so tough… good for you for still wanting to do your own thing despite such hard work during the day at your agency. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with and will be on the sidelines cheering you on :)

Ha, I know — the idea rush as you doze off thing drives me nuts (I mean, I’m glad to have them…) but yeah, turning on the lights and sketching it out when you’ve just gotten comfy is a drag. The firm I work at bangs out projects an incredibly fast pace and it was overwhelming at first (still can be at times), but I’ve grown to appreciate how efficient it’s made me as a designer. I typically like to spend a while with projects, really putting the time and love into them, so I’m excited to do that with my personal side projects since I can’t at my day job! :) Thanks for being such an awesome supporter and friend to me, Jo! xo.

Hell yes, girl! Slaving away at a design job 9-5 (who am I kidding, more like 9-9) is so creatively draining! I had a bout with major burnout when I was in advertising. The deadlines were insanity, just like yours are. So I truly admire your determination to push forward on your own projects outside of the office. Just getting started is half the battle. Can’t wait to see what you create, luv. xo
